FAQ

What are chlamydia and gonorrhea?

Genital chlamydia infection is caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium which is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the UK. The prevalence of infection is highest in young sexually active adults (15 to 24 years olds).

Chlamydia often has no symptoms but can lead to a wide range of complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy and tubal factor infertility (TFI) in women, and represents a substantial public health problem.

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK.

Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal intercourse or genital contact with an infected partner. An infected person may have no symptoms but still transmit the infection. Occasionally, gonorrhea can cause serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.

What are the symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea?
For women, symptoms of chlamydia may include:

  • Change in vaginal discharge (watery, green or yellow discharge)
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Pain in the stomach area
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Heavier periods
Symptoms may appear within 1-3 weeks of coming into contact with the infection however, in some cases, symptoms may take months to appear or may not even appear at all.
If you are not experiencing symptoms but feel you may have been in contact with the infection, it is still very important to be tested, especially before future sexual relations.
When can I take my test?

Using the Certific App, it is possible to perform a test 365 days a year.

It is possible to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea within a few days of having sexual relations, however we recommend that you wait up to 2 weeks before testing to avoid a false negative result.  It is not necessary to wait for symptoms of either infection as symptoms of both chlamydia and gonorrhea may take several weeks to months to appear, or you may remain without any symptoms at all.  If you feel that you may have been on contact with either infection, please avoid sexual relations until you have been tested and completed treatment if positive.

What do I need before starting my test?

Before starting your test, please be somewhere comfortable with close access to a toilet, and making sure you have a full bladder.

You will also need:

  • Your Government issued photo ID
  • Smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer for guidance and test kit registration

The test will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Why do I need to complete a questionnaire?

All users of our service will be required to complete a short health questionnaire. This is to aid with the diagnosis as well as ensuring that you have no other serious health conditions which may need more urgent medical attention.

If we do identify something requiring more urgent medical attention, you will be immediately notified of what to do next.

How does the test work?
  • Use the test kit provided by Certific
  • Collect the sample according to the guidance, place it into the sample bag, seal it and order a courier to take it to the lab
  • You will get your result in 24 hours after receipt of your sample to our laboratory
What happens if I test positive?

Both chlamydia and gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotics meaning that if you test positive for either chlamydia and/or gonorrhea, our doctors will provide a treatment plan, which may include a prescription, plus expert medical advice on what to do / not do and how to protect yourself in the future.

Who should I tell if I test positive?

If you test positive for either chlamydia or gonorrhea, it is important to inform your previous sexual partners, as they may also be positive but are not experiencing symptoms.  If left untreated, both chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to more serious health issues in the future. For chlamydia, you should inform all partners in the last 6 months and for gonorrhoea all partners in the last 2 months since testing positive.

You can use an anonymous text messaging service. https://www.anonymoustext.co.uk/blog/amp/anonymously-report-an-sti/

What medications will I be prescribed?

Our doctor will determine the appropriate medication depending on your answers to our health questionnaire. Allergies and other medical criteria, determine the correct medication to be prescribed.

Are there any extra costs?

Our price includes an STI test kit and an e-prescription sent directly to your email.  Medication costs are NOT included in the price.
