FAQ

General Questions

How does Certific work?

Certific’s technology and testing process allow you to take a medically certified Covid test safely in the comfort of your home. Through the unique video-recorded testing procedure, Certific will verify your identity, your test device, the accuracy of your sampling, and your test result.

Process:

  • Purchase a test certification service online.
  • Download the Certific App and create an account. At a suitable time, and from the convenience of your home, take the video-recorded test following the step-by-step instructions in the Certific App.
  • Certific’s Test Quality Officers will (1) review the video recording of the test, (2) verify the identity of the person, (3) the test device and (4) the result. If everything was done correctly, the test will be signed off by a medical professional.
  • In case of Lateral Flow Antigen Tests, a medical certificate will be issued within 4 hours of completing the test process in the app. In the case of a PCR test, the sample is sent to a lab and results will be available on the Certific App within 24 hours of receiving your sample.
  • A QR code and medical certificate containing the test result will be available in the Certific App and a PDF copy sent to your email.

What is the purpose of Certific?

Certific is a platform that enables certified remote medical testing at scale. We combine science and technology with easy and affordable access to mass testing to increase efficiency, speed and reliability of home testing.

Who was it made by?

Certific was created by entrepreneurs and scientists who wanted to find a better way to get us out of the economy shut down by using data smarter.

Is Certific a UK government authorised provider?

Certific offers healthcare services in partnership with Dr Jack Kreindler Consulting Limited, a government authorised provider in the UK.

Tests and testing

What is a video-recorded test?

A video of the testing process is required to verify your identity, your test device, the accuracy of your sampling, and your test result. A medically supervised Test Control Officer will review the video.

Please note that without a clear video recording of the test being done, we will not be able to issue your test certificate and you will be asked to repeat the procedure with an unused test kit.

Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the testing process by watching this demo video and checking this leaflet.

What happens to my video once the process has finished?

Certific will delete all test videos and data after three months. You can always use your right to get your data deleted before that by sending a request to dpo@certific.co.

What kind of tests can be taken with Certific App?

We currently offer a certification service for the following Lateral Flow Self-Tests:

  • Hughes Healthcare COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Lateral Flow Test Kit (Self Test Approved)
  • Flowflex™ SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test (Self Testing)

Please note:

  • We cannot provide a medical certificate for test kits not mentioned on the above list.
  • The test must be CE marked for Self Testing (with CE 0123 mark on the package).

Our certified PCR tests for travel are currently sold out. Below you can find a link to a government website with information on alternative PCR test providers.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/list-of-private-providers-of-coronavirus-testing/list-of-private-providers-of-coronavirus-testing

Who performs the tests?

The users themselves perform the tests in the privacy of their home. Our app and web platforms enable people to securely record a video of themselves taking the test, while following very strict guidelines. The video will then be reviewed by our Test Quality Officers and signed off by a medical professional.

Where can I buy Lateral Flow test kits approved by Certific?

We will be adding impartial providers to the following list:

*This list will be updated on a weekly basis.

Will my certificate be valid for travel?

In case of Lateral Flow Antigen Tests, our medical certificate can be used as a Fit to Fly Certificate for certain destinations only. Please check relevant travel advice here.

In the case of a PCR test, our medical certificate is valid for all travel purposes, providing that you have taken your test at the correct time following the full government guidelines of your destination or arrival country.

Where can I find up-to-date travel requirements?

For all the latest travel, test and quarantine requirements for the UK, please see https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

When will I get my results?

In case of Lateral Flow / Rapid Antigen tests, your medical certificate will be available on the Certific App within 4 hours after completing the testing process. For tests completed after 8pm, medical certificates may only be available from 8am the following day. You will also receive a PDF copy of the medical certificate sent to the email address used for registration.

In the case of a PCR test, the sample is shipped to the lab and results will be available on the Certific App within 24 hours of receiving your sample. For all samples received before 1pm, results will be available the same day.

Private COVID testing

What you need to know about Private COVID testing and Private UK COVID testing providers?

Under the obligations to meeting the minimum standards set by the UK Government, Private providers must clearly communicate the following to all individuals and employers:

  • the benefits and drawbacks of testing
  • how reliable the results will be, and what the limitations are
  • what your test result means
  • how we and our Private Providers are following the measures for meeting the standards for testing set out in government guidance

Our Private COVID Testing partner ('Healthcare Provider') in the UK is an authorised, regulated clinic and medical laboratory that sets the requirements, supervises and issues your medical Certificate of COVID Status. We work closely with our Private Provider to ensure that both the provider and we follow the legislation and regulations that must be followed, including around data protection, patient confidentiality, mandatory reporting to Public Health England (PHE) in accordance with public health legislation. How we and the Healthcare Provider work to meet these standards can be read in our Terms and Conditions, Data and Privacy Policy.

What are the benefits of testing?

Testing using Rapid Antigen Lateral Flow Devices ('LFT's) have the benefit of being able to screen people who are highly infectious at the time.

Self-Test LFTs that meet the minimum standards of sensitivity (which means the ability to detect parts of the virus) from samples people can take themselves at home, can give an almost instant result. The sample does not need to be sent to a lab to wait for a result.

Self-Test LFTs are as devices far less costly than laboratory tests.

What are the drawbacks of testing?

Self-test LFTs by definition are taken by the patient or parent/guardian of the patient without any independent professional quality assurance or validation of the patient's identity. This means that you can only self certify that you did the test and did it properly. The Certific professional medical certification service, however, overcomes this problem at a lower cost than a live interaction with or visit to a healthcare professional.

Self-test LFTs like with all LFTs are not as sensitive as PCR tests. LFTs are comparable to the more expensive Laboratory PCR tests when you are very infectious (or have a high viral load), but if you are at the beginning of the infectious period a lateral flow test may be negative and days or even hours later you may become infectious to others. It is very important to follow the public health guidance therefore. If you have been exposed, have symptoms or been told to isolate you must do so and not assume that a self-test LFT is a guarantee of being clear for the foreseeable future. If you are vaccinated (or otherwise have natural immunity), taken precautions, and have had no contact or symptoms in the last 10 days, it is extremely unlikely you will become infectious to others with a negative lateral flow test for that day at least, given what we know of current variants.

In summary, no tests currently available are good at detecting if you have been infected with the virus the day you caught it or the first 2 to 3 days of 'incubation'. LTFs are not as good as PCR tests at the early stage when the viral load increases when you are infected but less infectious. So LFTs can lead to a false sense of security and need to be repeated more often if being relied upon as a screening tool, especially for those exposed to others in areas of high prevalence.

How reliable will the test results be?

Every Self Test LFTs that Certific certifies (on behalf of the Healthcare Provider as having been taken correctly, being a valid test device and having been taken by the person claiming to take the test) devices that meet the standards set by the UK Government.

These test devices must carry a CE mark for self-test use and have also been independently validated for the purpose of self testing. As a result we rely on the manufacturer's performance claims backed up by the UK's official independent analysis and that the performance meets the standards required for self-test LFTs.

We certify on behalf of the Healthcare Provider that the performance of the self-test can be relied upon.

The reliability of a negative test result is not 100% as the sensitivity of the test is not 100%.

For the detection of high viral loads which equate to high infectivity at the time of taking the test.

All tests we certify meet the required performance standards for travellers entering the UK of ≥97% specificity, ≥80% sensitivity at viral loads above 100,000 copies/ml (10^4).

What are the limitations of the test result?

This self-test result will, if valid, and taken properly allow our medical certification team to issue a medical Certificate on behalf of our our partner Healthcare Provider. This Certificate of the result is only for the test result at the time of taking the test.

We can make no guarantees that your status will have changed from the time you took the test to the time you travel. That means that if you are asked to retest prior to, for instance, travelling abroad, a negative test at the time may not be negative afterwards.

While we make every effort to ensure we only Certify tests comply with national and international standards for travel, you must check with the airlines, travel companies, and national authorities of the country you are travelling to that the test is valid for that specific country.

If the authority or organisation requiring you to be tested needs you to have a PCR test or other NAAT test, this self-test LFT for detecting Coronavirus Antigens will not be sufficient.

What does the test result mean?

A negative result means you are unlikely to be infectious and to give the virus to others at the time of taking the test. It does not prove that you are not infected and will become infectious in the coming days. A negative self test LFT normally means you do not have enough viral particles (antigens) to be detected by the test.

A positive result means you have the virus and are most likely to be infectious to others. In this case you will have to self-isolate and follow the national public health guidance immediately This is will normally mean you will not be able to travel and will have to take a confirmatory PCR test. In rare instances, because the test can be positive when you would otherwise be negative from a laboratory PCR test, you could receive a false positive result. The performance of the test is such that less than 3 in 100.

An invalid or unclear result means you will have to take the test again as it was not taken properly or the test device was faulty.

What measures are we taking to meet the standards for testing?

Certific operates as an authorised sub-contractor of professional medical certification services to UKAS Stage-3 applicant or fully accredited private testing providers ('Healthcare Provider')

We work on a continuous basis with Certific's Healthcare provider in the UK to ensure the service complies with several key standards and the requirements of numerous regulatory bodies:

  1. International Standards for Medical Laboratories regulated by The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS)

    ISO:15189
    ISO:22870

  2. The Care Quality Commission of Great Britain (CQC) that regulates medical clinics has inspected the Healthcare Provider that their clinical facilities and Standard Operating Procedures meet the regulatory requirements.
  3. The requirements of the Care Quality Commission and UKAS for the Medical Director of the Healthcare Provider Clinic and Medical Laboratory to be a GMC Registered, Appraised and Revalidated Doctor and for all staff and resources to meet the standards required.
  4. UK Government's requirements to meet or exceed the minimum standards required for Private Providers of COVID testing in the UK.
