FAQ

What is a UTI?

UTI or Urinary Tract Infection, also referred to as cystitis, is the most common infection of the urinary tract, which includes kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.  It can affect men, women and children of all ages, however women are more commonly affected.

The symptoms vary from person to person but include a burning sensation when passing urine, increased frequency of passing urine more at night and a change in the appearance or smell of the urine.

A UTI can improve by itself and be aided by simple measures such as increasing fluid intake or the use of cranberry juice. In some cases, these measure alone will not work, and you may need a short course of prescribed antibiotics.

If left untreated, a UTI can lead to a more serious infection involving the kidneys, and therefore early diagnosis and treatment is advised.

What do I need before starting my test?

Before starting your test, please be somewhere comfortable with close access to a toilet, and making sure you have a full bladder.

You will also need:

  • Your Government issued photo ID
  • A clean and disposable, plastic sample collection cup.
  • Smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer with a camera to photograph your results.

The test will take approximately 5 minutes to complete your questionnaire and another 5 minutes for the urine dip test.

Why do I need to complete a questionnaire?

All users of our service will be required to complete a short health questionnaire.  This is to aid with the diagnosis as well as ensuring that you have no other serious health conditions which may need more urgent medical attention.

If we do identify something requiring more urgent medical attention, you will be immediately notified of what to do next.

How does the test work?

The SURESIGN® test strips are a self-test, in vitro diagnostic kit for the rapid detection of both Leukocytes & Nitrites from human urine.

Leukocytes: This lest reveals the presence of granulocyte esterases.  The esterases cleave derivatized pyrazole amino acid ester to liberate derivatized. hydroxyl pyrazole. This pyrazole then reacts with a diazonium salt to produce a beige-pink to purple colour.

Nitrites: This test depends upon the conversion of nitrate to nitrite by the action of Gram negative bacteria in the urine. In an acidic medium, nitrite in the urine reacts with p- arsanilic acid to form a diazonium compound. The diazonium compound in turn couples with 1 N-(1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine to produce a pink colour.

Are there any extra costs?

Our price includes a test kit (SURESIGN® Urinary Tract Infection Test Strips x 3) and an e-prescription sent directly to your email.  Medication costs are NOT included in the price.  Prescriptions in UK pharmacies start from £9.35
